DATES – DATAS

Há várias formas de escrevermos as datas em Inglês, no Inglês Americano ou Inglês Britânico.

1.Formato Britânico:

Dia – Mês – Ano

Como se escreve:

1. sempre escrevemos com letra maiúscula o mês do ano.
2. as últimas duas letras (st, nd, rd, th) dos numerais ordinais seguidas ao dia do mês são por vezes usadas.
3. a vírgula a seguir ao mês é facultativa.

Ex:
12.10.10 ou 12-10-10 ( informal)
12/10/10 ( + oficial)
12 October 2010 (formal)
12 October, 2010 ( formal)
12th October 2010 ou 12th October, 2010    (formal)

Como se lê:

1. O dia do mês é sempre lido como numeral ordinal.
2. O artigo definido  the e a preposição of são usadas.

Ex:
30 April 1978  – the thirtieth of April, nineteen seventy-eight
12 June 1999  – June  the twelfth, nineteen ninety-nine
15 June 2000 – June  the fifteenth, two thousand
15 June 2000  – the fifteenth of June, two thousand
30 June 1978 – June  the thirtieth, nineteen seventy-eight
12 October 1999  – the twelfth of October, nineteen ninety-nine

2. Formato Americano:

Mês – Dia – Ano

Como se escreve:

1. Da mesma forma, o mês é sempre escrito com letra maiúscula.
2. Por extenso, a vírgula é sempre usada seguida ao dia.
3. O mês vem sempre antes do dia, tanto na forma abreviada como por extenso.

Ex.:
10.12.10 ou 10-12-10 ( Informal)
10/12/10 ( + oficial)
October 12, 2010 (formal)

Como se lê :

1. O dia do mês é sempre lido como numeral ordinal.
2. O artigo definido the é facultativo.

Ex:
April 12, 1999  April (the) twelfth, nineteen ninety-nine
May 15, 2000  May (the) fifteenth, two thousand
June 30, 1978  June (the) thirtieth, nineteen seventy-eight

Note:
* Pode utilizar ponto final (full stop) ou hífen (hyphen) ao invés de barra (slash)nos formatos numéricos.
Ex:

12.10.2010 ou 12-10-2010.

* Pode, também escrever a data numericamente na ordem Ano-Mês-Dia (Year-Month-Day = 2010/10/12), mas esta maneira é utilizada em em documentos muito oficiais ou técnicos.

Formal ou informal?

Informal - usado em uma carta impessoal de negócios (an impersonal business letter),um memorando ( a memo), uma carta entre amigos (a letter between friends).

+ oficial (12/10/10 e 10/12/10) – usado bastante em documento oficial e técnico (official and technical document) e também em faturas (invoices).

* O formato (the First of October, 2010 ou October, the First, 2010) é bastante formal e utilizado em convite.

* BC (= Before Christ - antes de Cristo – a.C.) - vem após a data
* AD (= Anno Domini – em Latim in the year of the Lord (= no ano do Senhor) – depois de Cristo – d.C.) - vem antes ou depois da data.
Ex:
in 200 BC
in AD 200
