Question Tag ou Tag Question ou ainda Tag Ending são pequenas perguntas colocadas ao final das orações, para pedir uma informação ou confirmação do que foi dito.

Equivale em Português às expressões “né?” e “tá?“.

Devemos acrescentar uma entonação específica no diálogo falado à Question Tag .Esta entonação pode significar uma simples pergunta ou uma confirmação de um fato já conhecido pelos falantes.

He can speak English , can´t he?  Ele fala Inglês, não fala?
You are Brazilian , aren´t you?  Você é brasileiro, não é?

USO:

1. Usamos o Tag Ending negativo ( forma contraída), após uma oração afirmativa.

You can go, can’t you?
Mary is working, isn’t she?
Paul will come, won’t he?
They work in the morning, don’t they?
Bob plays the piano, doesn’t he?
Mary talked to you, didn’t she?
He is a custumer, isn’t he?
You will go, won’t you?

2. O Tag Ending será afirmativo quando a oração for negativa.

He isn’t custumer, is he?
Mary isn’t working, is she?
Paul won’t come, will he?
They don’t work in the morning, do they?
Bob doesn’t play the piano, does he?
Mary didn’t talk to you, did she?
She doesn’t speak English, does she?
He won’t come in time, will he?

3. Características gerais do Tag Ending:

a) vem sempre após uma vírgula;
b) é sempre formado por um verbo auxiliar ou anômalo e um pronome;
c) a forma negativa aparece sempre abreviada.

4. Casos especiais:

a) I am very late, aren’t I ? / am I not?
b) Let’s go home now, shall we?
c) Open the window, will you?
d) Don’t open the window, will you?
e) She may go now, may she not?
f) That is good, isn’t it?

5. Com expressões negativas como: nobody, never, hardly, seldom, nothing, rarely, etc, o Tag Ending será positivo.
There is nobody home, is there?
She never comes here, does she?
